From Frankish *rōstjan (“to roast”), from Proto-Germanic *raustijaną (“to roast”), from Proto-Indo-European *reus- (“to crasckle, roast”). Cognate with Old High German rōsten (“to roast”), Middle Dutch roosten (“to roast”). More at roast.
