Etymology[edit]

From Middle English rudnen, equivalent to rud (to become red; redden) +‎ -en. Possibly merged with Old Norse roðna (to become red; redden) (whence Old Danish rodne, Swedish rodna (to redden)). Compare also Danish rødme (to blush).
