Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *p-laːŋʔ (bright) (in which *pl- had changed to *pʰr- and from there developed to its current form), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *plaaŋʔ. Cognates with láng in sáng láng. Compare Thai ปลั่ง (bplàng).
