From Proto-Somaloid *sagaal/*saagal, literally meaning "lack one", from Proto-Lowland East Cushitic *ca-gollí, a compound of *ʔac (to lack) + *goll (one), the latter is from Proto-Cushitic *gʷal- (one) (whence Beja gaal, Tsamai gollan).

Cognate with Maay sagaal, Garre sagaal, Aweer saagal, Rendille saagal, Jiiddu sagaal, Baiso saagaal, Arbore saagald, Daasanach saal, El Molo sagal or saakal, Oromo sagal, Afar sagáal, Yaaku saakal. Borrowed into Nandi sogol.
