Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish صانمق (sanmaq, to deem, think, suppose, imagine), from Proto-Turkic *sā-n-mak (to be counted, be regarded), originally passive/reflexive of *sā-mak (to think, count, regard). See saymak (to count, regard). Cognate with Karakhanid سَنْماقْ (sanmāq, to be counted, be regarded, to think).
