Etymology

From Old Saxon skrivan, from Proto-Germanic *skrībaną, a late borrowing from Latin scrībō. Compare Dutch schrijven, German schreiben, English shrive, West Frisian skriuwe, Danish skrive, Swedish skriva, Icelandic skrifa.
