Usage notes

[edit]

Sekä can be used to contrast with ja, in order to avoid repeating ja: ja groups together more closely related words, while sekä joins these groups together, with sekä indicating a more distant relation. For example, saippuaa, tuhoeläinten karkoitetta sekä lamppu- ja moottoriöljyä "soap, pest repellent as well as lamp and motor oil". Sekä can be also used to join subordinate clauses instead of ja, when the main clause already uses ja. For example, Poliisi sai Salosta useita ilmoituksia miehestä, joka oli ahdistellut ja kosketellut lapsia ja naisia sekä paljastellut itseään "The police got multiple reports from Salo about a man, who had molested and touched children and women as well as indecently exposed himself."

See the usage notes under ja.
