Alteration (due to folk etymology) of shamefast, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English schamefast, schamfast, sceomefest, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English sceamfæst, scamfæst (“bashful, shy, modest”, literally “firm or fast in modesty or shame”), equivalent to shame + fast.
