Alteration (due to folk etymology) of shamefast, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English schamefast, schamfast, sceomefest, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English sceamfæst, scamfæst (bashful, shy, modest, literally firm or fast in modesty or shame), equivalent to shame +‎ fast.
