Either from Vulgar Latin *extentāre, from Latin tentāre, or from s- (from Latin Latin ex-) + tentare (from Latin temptāre), or from Vulgar Latin *abstentāre, from Latin abstentum, from abstineō.
Cognate with Friulian stentâ, Lombard stentà, Piedmontese stenté.
