From Proto-Germanic *stōdą, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (stand, set). Cognate with Old High German stuot (herd of horses) (German Stute (mare)), Old Norse stóð (Swedish sto (mare)). The Indo-European root is also the source of Albanian shtazë (animal, beast) and Old Church Slavonic стадо (stado, herd).
