Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *stōdą, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“stand, set”). Cognate with Old High German stuot (“herd of horses”) (German Stute (“mare”)), Old Norse stóð (Swedish sto (“mare”)). The Indo-European root is also the source of Albanian shtazë (“animal, beast”) and Old Church Slavonic стадо (stado, “herd”).
