[edit]Inherited from Old Polish tążyć, from Proto-Slavic *tǫžiti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tangīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *tongʰ-éye-ti, éye-causative of *tengʰ- (“to pull back, be heavy”). By surface analysis, tęgi + -yć.
