Debated:[1] perhaps from a West Germanic language, from Proto-Germanic *takkô (“tip; point; protrusion; prong; tine; jag; spike; twig”): compare Portuguese tacão, Spanish tacón, English tach, Old French taque (“nail, pin, peg”), Dutch tak (“twig; branch; limb”), German Zacke (“jag; prong; spike; tooth; peak”).
