From terpentin or terpin + -ol, reduction from terebinth, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek τερέβινθος (terébinthos), itself likely a loan from a non-Indo-European language; possibly (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Minoan.
