From Middle Low German tippen (“to touch lightly”), from Middle Low German tip (“tip, fingertip”), cognate with English tip. Merged with Central and Low German tippen, dippen, düppen (“to dip, to dab, to tap”), from Proto-Germanic *dupjaną, cognate with tupfen and English dip. The sense “to type” is influenced by English type.
