from Proto-Germanic *Tīwas dagaz (Tuesday, literally Tiw's Day), from *Tīwaz (Tyr, god of war) + *dagaz (day). This was a Germanic interpretation of Latin dies Martis, itself a translation of Ancient Greek Ἄρεως ἡμέρα (Áreōs hēméra) (interpretatio romana).
