[edit]From Old Danish undfange, formally = und- (“away”) + fange (“to catch”). Borrowed from Middle Low German entvangen, Middle Low German untfangen, cf. German empfangen (“to receive, conceive”). The second part of this word is Proto-Germanic *fanhaną (“to take, catch”).
