From earlier Proto-Italic *wogʷeō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wegʷʰ-. Cognates include Ancient Greek εὔχομαι (eúkhomai), Sanskrit वाघत् (vāghát) and Old Armenian գոգեմ (gogem).
