From Old High German wellen, from Proto-West Germanic *walljan, from Proto-Germanic *waljaną, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *welh₁-. Cognates include German wählen, Old Norse velja, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌻𐌾𐌰𐌽 (waljan).
