From Middle English wrighte, wriȝte, wruhte, wurhte, from Old English wyrhta (worker; wright; workman; artificer; laborer; craftsman), from Proto-Germanic *wurhtijô (as in *wurkijaną), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (to work) (English work). Cognate with wrought, dated Dutch wrecht.
