From Proto-Hmong *jəŋᶜ (to be). Related to Proto-Hmong *ʔɲəŋᴬ (to be at, to live) (whence nyob (to be at, to live), as well as probably Proto-Mien *ʔjəmᴬ (to be at, to live).[1]
