Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch seehont. Synchronically equivalent to zee ‎(sea) +‎ hond ‎(hound, dog).

Middle Dutch seehont, is possibly an alteration of seelhont ‎(literally seal-hound, seal-dog), from seel ‎(seal), from Proto-Germanic *selhaz. Compare Low German Saalhund ‎(seal).
