Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *pikrós, formally identical to Proto-Slavic *pьstrъ (variegated), which is from Proto-Indo-European *piḱ-rós, from the root *peyḱ- (color, speckle). Further cognate is ποικίλος (poikílos, particoloured).
