Etymology[edit]

Related to вастомс (vastoms, to meet). Ultimately probably from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *wasta (a place opposite or across), whence Moksha васта (vasta), Finnish vasta-, Estonian vast, Livonian vast, Northern Sami vuostá, Eastern Mari ваштареш (vaštareš).
