Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic участие (učastije), from Old Church Slavonic оучѧстиѥ (učęstije). By surface analysis, участь (učastʹ) +‎ -ие (-ije). The modern meanings arose due to French influence, compare French avoir part and French prendre part, which were calqued as принима́ть уча́стие (prinimátʹ učástije, to take part).
