Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain, possibly from a p-extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (to cut, trim), whence Latin scalpo (to carve) and English sculpt.

Mayrhofer mentions the possibility that the causative कल्पयति (kalpáyati) originated as a p-causative of a variant of कृ (kṛ, to do, make). The intransitive कल्पते (kálpate) would then be a backformation from the causative.
