Etymology[edit]

The full name for the city is 阿倫阿爾山阿伦阿尔山 (Ālún Ā'ěrshān), a transcription of Mongolian ᠬᠠᠯᠠᠭᠤᠨ
ᠷᠠᠰᠢᠶᠠᠨ
(qalaɣun rasiyan, literally hot holy water).

The Mongolian name is composed of native ᠬᠠᠯᠠᠭᠤᠨ (qalaɣun, hot) + non-native ᠷᠠᠰᠢᠶᠠᠨ (rasiyan, holy water, spring). The latter, which corresponds to Chinese 阿爾山阿尔山 (Ā'ěrshān), was loaned from Sanskrit रसायन (rasāyana, elixir).
