Etymology 1[edit]

From earlier ետղ (etł), from Proto-Indo-European *sedlo-, from *sed- (to sit). Cognates include Ancient Greek (Laconia) ἑλλά (hella, seat), Latin sella (seat, chair, saddle), Old Church Slavonic седьло (Russian седло), Old High German sezzal (seat) (German Sessel) and Old English setl (English settle).

A Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Syriac ܛܠܐ (ṭalāʼ, dew). Hebrew טל (ṭal) and Arabic طَلّ (ṭal) are cognate. Note the form տաղ- (tał-) found in the spelling of տաղատարափ.
