From Pali yama (Yama) or Sanskrit यम (yama, Yama). Cognate with Old Khmer យម (yama), យំ (yaṃ); Modern Khmer យម (yum); Burmese ယာမာ (yama); Chinese 閻摩阎摩 (Yánmó); Japanese 閻魔; Korean 염마 (yeomma).
