From แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ, female prefix) +‎ มด (mót, person of occult knowledge; person who practices magic or sorcery).

Cognate with Lao ແມ່ມົດ (mǣ mot, witch), Zhuang mehmoed (female shaman),[1] ᦶᦙᧈᦷᦙᧆ (mae¹mod, witch); Compared with Khmer មេមត់ (mei mŭət, witch; medium).
