Originally written as , a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ʔsoːŋ) : semantic (wood) + phonetic . The phonetic component was later replaced by (zōng).

Etymology

Wang (1982) relates it to (OC *ʔsloːŋʔ, “to collect”), (OC *ʔsoːŋ, “sheaf; bundle”), (OC *ʔsoːŋ, “mane”).
