From Proto-Germanic *beranan, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. Cognate with Old High German beran, Old Saxon beran, Old Norse bera, Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽. The Indo-European root was also the source of Old Irish biru, Ancient Greek φέρω, Latin ferre.
