Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *süntüdäk, from Proto-Uralic *sentew-. Cognates include Finnish syntyä, Võro sündümä, Livonian sindõ, (Salaca) sündõ, Votic süntüä, Ingrian syntyä, Karelian syntyö, Ludian sündüdä (to fit), Veps sünduda; Northern Sami šaddat (from *šëntëtēk); Komi-Zyrian содны (sodny, to grow) and possibly also Hungarian ellik (to give birth, to calve).
