Perhaps because originally “apocopate mood”, but it is mostly encountered as a noun, and I am not sure “modus apocopatus” is the original, rather not; older e.g. Hebrew futurum apocopatum; anyway the verb apocopare was used by philologists in the 16th century already. Some emphasize that it is not jussive. undo
