Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek ἀπεχθάνομαι (apekhthánomai, I am hated) also with transitive sense since Hellenistic times. From ἀπεχθής (apekhthḗs, hateful) from ἀπ(ό) (with emphasizing sense) + ἔχθος n (ékhthos, hatred). Morphologically απ- + εχθ‑ + ‑άνομαι.
