Etymology

Inherited from Mediaeval Byzantine Greek σωπαίνω (sōpaínō), from Ancient Greek σιωπῶ (siōpô) σιωπ- with deletion of [i] between [s] and vowel + the verb suffix -αίνω (-aíno).[1]
