Inherited from Ancient Greek σύζυγος (súzugos, mate, yoked together), from συ(ν) (su(n), together) +‎ ζυγός (zugós, yoke, pair), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (to join, tie together).
