Etymology 1
[edit]From бу́ло (búlo, “veil”) or бу́ла (búla, “veiled Muslim woman”).
Sense 3 is a diminutive of dialectal бу́ла (búla, “common poppy”). Also found in Macedonian булка (bulka) and Serbo-Croatian bȗlka / бу̑лка. Compare parallel formation of dialectal кадъ́нка (kadǎ́nka, “common poppy”, literally “little Muslim woman”).
