Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian ве́ресень (véresenʹ), from earlier Old Ruthenian вресень, врешень (vresenʹ, vrešenʹ), remodeled after native ве́ресъ (véres), from Middle Polish wrzesień, from Proto-Slavic *versьnь.[1] By surface analysis, ве́рес (véres, heather) +‎ -ень (-enʹ), since heather flowers in September. Compare Belarusian ве́расень (vjérasjenʹ, September) and Polish wrzesień.
