From Proto-Slavic *gǫba. Cognate with Bulgarian гъба ‎(gǎba), Slovak huba, Serbo-Croatian губа/guba, Slovene goba. Non-Slavic cognates include Pashto غومبه ‎(γumba, swelling). Compare Latin fungus, Ancient Greek σπόγγος ‎(spóngos).
