From Proto-Mongolic *darasun, compare Dongxiang darasun.
Perhaps of Indo-Iranian origin, compare Persian تلخ (“bitter”), Common Turkic *tarka, *talka (“bitter, sour”). See also тараг (tarag, “yoghurt”).
