From Proto-Slavic *klasti; compare Old Church Slavonic класти (klasti) (first singular кладѫ (kladǫ)), Ukrainian класти (klasty), Belarusian класць (klascʹ), Serbo-Croatian кла̏сти (first singular кла́де̄м), Slovene klásti (first singular kládem), Czech klást (first singular kladu), Slovak klаsť, Polish kłaść (first singular kładę). More distantly cognate with Lithuanian klóti (to lay, to cover) (first singular klóju), Latvian klât (to cover) (first singular klâju), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌸𐌰𐌽 (hlaþan, to load), English lade, Old High German hladan (to load), German laden (to load). Not cognate with English load.
