From Classical Mongolian ᠮᠥᠷᠡᠨ (mörän, a big river), from Middle Mongolian ᠮᠥᠷᠡᠨ (mörän, a river), Proto-Mongolic *mörän (river, sea). Cognate with Dongxiang moron, etc.
