Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *nizati. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian ни́зати (1sg. ни̑же̄м), Slovene nízati (tonal orthography) (1sg. nȋžem, nȋzam (tonal orthography)), Bulgarian ни́жа (níža), Church Slavonic низати (nizati), Polish nanizać, Lower Sorbian nizaś. Related to Proto-Slavic *nьziti; compare Russian вонзи́ть (vonzítʹ), пронзи́ть (pronzítʹ).
