From Old East Slavic паꙗти (pajati, to forge). Cognate with Ukrainian пая́ти (pajáty). Usually connected to Church Slavonic съпоити (sŭpoiti, to connect, to solder), Serbo-Croatian спо̀јити (to join, to solder) (1sg. спо̏jӣм), Slovene spojíti (to join, to solder) (1sg. spojím), Czech pojiti (to join) (also spojiti), Polish spoić (to join).
