Russian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain; likely a cross between dialectal стебну́ть (stebnútʹ, perfective), стёбывать (stjóbyvatʹ, to stitch; whip; eat up, imperfective) and издева́ться (izdevátʹsja, to jeer, bully). The former may be an alteration of стега́ть (stegátʹ, to whip; to stitch, to quilt), or could be denominal from сте́бель (stébelʹ, a stalk), i.e. used as a whip.
