Borrowing from Old Armenian եղբայր ‎(ełbayr). All dialectal forms point to Old Armenian *աղբայր ‎(*ałbayr), which is either a modification of եղբայր ‎(ełbayr) or is its byform.

By dissimilation from *երբայր ‎(*erbayr), by a adding a prothetic vowel to *րբայր ‎(*rbayr), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh₂tēr with regular *Dr*rD metathesis and *-t--յ- ‎(-y-) sound change between vowels.
