Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Based on the citation «թլիփ ածեալ (ծարրով) պաճուճեաց զանտառս արտեւանանց» some dictionaries wrongly explain the word as “decoration, ornament”. However, the original meaning must have been “border, hem (especially a round one)”. From the word թլփատեմ (tʻlpʻatem, to cut the foreskin round about, to circumcise) post-classical authors falsely back-formed the sense of “privy parts; prepuce”.

Noun

թլիփ (tʻlipʻ)

  1. a band sewn unto the borders of the collar or pockets for durability or as an ornament
