Borrowed from Parthian *varž. Compare Manichaean Parthian 𐫇𐫡𐫝 (wrc /⁠varž⁠/, miracle, magic). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *warj-; see there for more.

Doublet of վարդապետ (vardapet), վարձ (varj), and գործ (gorc).
