Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yạĺ(č)uk (“light”), a development of *yạĺ(č)- (“to blaze, flame”), the same source of ایشیمق (ışımak, “to shine”) and ایشین (ışın, “flash, gleam, lightning glow”). Cognate with Azerbaijani işıq (“light”) and Turkmen yşyk (“light”).
