From Proto-Turkic *aydïŋ (light); cognate with Azerbaijani aydın, Kazakh айдың (aidyñ), Turkmen aýdyň and Tuvan айдың (aydıñ). As a city, named in honor of Aydin Mehmet Bey upon his dynasty's conquest of Güzelhisar.
